How Fresh Grads Can Create An Impressive Resume - CareerAlley
How Fresh Grads Can Create An Impressive Resume - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. A fresh graduates resume is a focused one-page marketing document. It includes a concise job goal that molds the resume writers descriptions of each past job and related experiences. To land your dream job, you must be ahead of the game. A winning resume is what you need to be noticed among hundreds of job applicants. Most fresh graduates fall victim to common job application mistakes. If you are not careful, you could be one of them. Here, college admission consultants share a quick guide to save you from these blunders and to help you create the resume that will become your ticket to your dream job. Photo by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash 1. Start Off With Your Contact Information Your resume must have your name, location, and contact information, like your email address and mobile number, at the top of the document. It is also important to include a link to your professional profile. Fresh graduates should have at least one profile to represent their professional brand. Those who want to be employed in a creative field must have an online portfolio. Including your portfolios link to your contact information will help employers learn more about your capabilities. The funny thing about the recruiting process is that if you read job ads, youd think that employers are strictly looking for people with very specific types of experience. Thats all you can see in a job ad long lists of bullet points with Essential Requirements like years of experience with certain tools, and obscure industry certifications! Once you get to a job interview, though, the whole picture changes. Employers are looking for qualities in their new hires that are never listed in the job ad. They want to meet people who are self-directed and responsible. You will bring out those qualities through your answers to the job-interview questions and also through the questions you ask your interview. Forbes.com 2. List Your Career Objectives Since you are a fresh graduate with limited experiences, the objective is the most important section of the resume. Getting the immediate attention of the employer is its main purpose. But this part must be short and concise. Moreover, it should highlight what knowledge, skills and abilities you have that will help the organization reach its goal. Bear in mind that each company has different goals, so your objective must be tailored for each job application. source 3. Cite Your Educational Attainment A fresh graduates resume must start with the highest educational attainment. Recruiters initially check if a job applicant meets certain requirements, such as your degree. The latest academic qualification should come first and the earliest ones last. To strengthen the chances of getting noticed, mention your GPA. Generally, if your GPA is above a 3.0, you must include it in your resume. And if your GPA in your major is higher as opposed to your overall GPA, use that instead. But if it is below a 3.0, consider not including this on your resume. However, know that most recruiters may ask about your GPA during the interview process, so you should know how to beat the low GPA despair. 4. Share Your Work Experiences You may be wondering what items must be included in this section when you have no work experience yet. Well, your part-time jobs and internships are part of your experiences. These situations have been crucial to you as you began to develop professionally. Jot down the most recent job you had, followed by the earliest ones. Mention the company, your job position or responsibilities, and how long you have been working there. Share also what you have achieved from such a job. source 5. Close Your Resume With Extracurricular Activities Fresh graduates often dismiss their experiences if they did not come in the form of a formal job or an internship. However, involvement in extracurricular activities can demonstrate that you gained valuable expertise. These include joining social groups and clubs and participating in sports. Volunteer work should also be included in your resume. Such experiences demonstrate your skills and capabilities. For example, if you were the event coordinator at your schools fundraising event, that can surely impress hiring managers, most especially if you wish to work in event management or non-profit fundraising organizations. Moreover, you can list student organizations and professional associations on your resume. Include all positions you held as well and your major accomplishments at each, if possible. However, you should not include high school activities or clubs. Additional Tips for Writing Your Resume Know the difference between a resume and a curriculum vitae Your resume and CV are two different things. Although both documents will outline your skills, experience, and accomplishments, they are not the same in some aspects: Your resume summarizes your eligibility and qualifications in a manner that is specific to the position youre applying for.

Web design and resume tips -
Web design and resume tips - This week, I noticed Chris Brogan posted a video highlighting tips from Derek Halpern of Social Triggers. In the video, Derek was outlining things to think about regarding website design and how to pull together a site to encourage people to take the actions you want them to take. Watching it, I realized a lot of the advice Derek offered is similar to advice to I give to help people optimize resumes. The first thing he said, Just because you know what youre about doesnt mean others do, got me taking notes for a resume post! Its so true, and something a lot of people dont think about when they write their own resumes. It could be very clear to you what youd like to do next, but if your resume (or online materials) dont make it obvious where you are headed, you will probably lose your audience. On a website, that means the reader will immediately click away. On a resume, it means you wont get a chance to interview for the job. Today, I reviewed a resume from someone I thought was interested in working in the medical field. (Based on something I had seen her post elsewhere.) However, the resume itself had nothing about the medical field on it at all. Im now assuming I was wrong about what I previously saw, but someone in a position to hire someone in the medical field will simply put the resume aside, assuming there is no direct connection between the candidate and his or her hiring needs. Another thing Derek points out in the video: Welcome is not a good benefit make a promise. This, in relation to how to encourage people on your website to DO what you want them to do. Just welcoming them doesnt cut it. Think about this regarding both cover letters and resumes how are you showcasing something (a promise) to encourage readers to be interested in learning more about you? And no, just saying, look at me isnt enough. Which leads to Dereks suggestion to use a headline at the top of a website! The best resumes today take advantage of headlines to reel readers in. The headline needs to be about your future, not your past. Its about the job you want NEXT. Do you use headlines in your resume? They can be your targeted title, focus on your accomplishments, skillsThe headline needs to be what will interest your reader. The headline is like a promise saying you are what the reader wants. Derek kept talking about making that promise. He reminded viewers of an interesting point:Ã Cluttered (web) pages used to convert better because people would be confused and click on ads. I thought that was so interesting! Maybe that is why there are so many cluttered web pages out there people are focusing on strategies that USED TO work. Same with resumes so many resumes look dated and old fashioned. Its time to think about what works today. Dont get caught up in yesterdays best practices. Derek also gives advice regarding regarding font size, color, encouraging people to take action once they land on your websiteWhile font sizes and use of color on resumes is a little different, the touch points between his web advice and resume advice are similar: you need to spell out your message clearly and make it easy to read and understand in order to convert readers to fans. Take a look at the video and be sure to visit Chris Brogans site for lots of useful and interesting information about social media and other topics. photo by ^..^ maggz ^..^

Psychologists Studied 5,000 Genius Kids for 45 Years Here Are Their 6 Key Takeaways
Psychologists Studied 5,000 Genius Kids for 45 Years â" Here Are Their 6 Key Takeaways Follow thousands of superbright kids for four and a half decades, and you learn a thing or two about how to raise a high-achiever. One of the biggest takeaways: Even kids with genius-level IQs need teachers to help them reach their full potential. Since it began in 1971, the âStudy of Mathematically Precocious Youth,â or SMPY, has tracked 5,000 of the smartest children in America â" the top 1%, 0.1%, and even 0.01% of all students. It is one of the longest-running studies of gifted children in history. Hereâs what the study found. The top 1%, 0.1%, and 0.01% of kids lead exceptional lives. SMPY (pronounced âsimpyâ) initially tested kidsâ intelligence using the SAT, university entrance exams, and other IQ tests. Researchers later began looking at additional factors like college enrollment and career paths later in life. What they found was the most-gifted kids went on to earn doctorates and graduate degrees, and hold patents at rates far above less-gifted children. Most sit among the top 5% of income earners. âWhether we like it or not, these people really do control our society,â Jonathan Wai, a psychologist at the Duke University Talent Identification Program, recently told Nature. Genius kids donât get enough attention. The trouble is that genius kids often receive too little attention from their teachers, who may be inclined to write off bright students as having already met their potential. When SMPY researchers looked at how much attention teachers gave to these gifted children, they found that the overwhelming majority of class time was spent helping low-achieving students get to the middle. SMPY suggests that teachers should avoid teaching a one-size-fits-all curriculum and instead focus on doing the best they can to create individualized lesson plans for students. Skipping a grade works. To help kids reach their potential, teachers and parents should consider moving a gifted child up a grade, SMPY suggests. When researchers compared a control group of gifted students who didnât skip a grade with those who did, the grade-skippers were 60% more likely to earn patents and doctorates â" and more than twice as likely to get a doctorate in a field related to science, technology, engineering, or math. Intelligence is highly varied. Being smart doesnât just mean having an ability to memorize facts or recall names and dates. SMPY has repeatedly found, throughout multiple follow-up analyses, that some of the smartest kids possess a great capacity for spatial reasoning. These kids have a talent for visualizing systems, such as the human circulatory system or the anatomy of a Honda. In 2013, follow-up surveys found a strong connection between spatial-reasoning skills and the number of patents filed and peer-reviewed papers published. Standardized tests arenât always a waste of time. Standardized tests â" the SAT among the famous of them â" canât measure everything teachers and parents need to know about a child. But SMPYâs data suggests that the SAT and other standardized measures of intelligence do hold some predictive power â" while still accounting for factors like socioeconomic status and level of practice. Camilla Benbow, one of the researchers studying SMPY, said these tests were best used to figure out what kids are good at so that teachers can focus their attention on different areas. Grit doesnât overshadow early cognitive ability. The psychologist Carol Dweck has found that successful people tend to keep whatâs known as a âgrowth mindsetâ as opposed to a âfixed mindset.â They view themselves as fluid, changing beings that can adapt and grow â" they are not static. SMPY agrees with that assessment, but it also has found that the earliest signs of cognitive ability in kids can predict how well theyâll do later in life, ignoring all the practice that may or may not come in between. With that kind of future on the line, itâs up to parents and teachers to recognize abilities early on and nurture them as much as possible. Correction: An earlier version of this article mischaracterized SMPY as the longest-running study of child geniuses. This article originally appeared in Business Insider.

How To Answer 3 Interview Questions For The Over 50 Job Seeker - Work It Daily
How To Answer 3 Interview Questions For The âOver 50â Job Seeker - Work It Daily Here are 3 interview questions you may be asked as an older job hunter with the best strategies for how to answer them. Navigating a successful job search can be tricky for the Over 50 set (and very often, the over 40). Age discrimination is alive and well, and even though your resume got you to the interview, your âexperienceâ might be a drawback. Related: 10 Tips For Job Seekers Over 50 Here are 3 interview questions you may be asked as an older job hunter with the best strategies for how to answer them. 1. You seem to be overqualified for this job. This isnât framed as a question, but it does demand a responseâ"or youâve lost the opportunity. You know they liked what they saw in your resume, but when theyâre staring you in the face, theyâre wondering if youâre really going to be a good fit. Will you be unhappy that youâre taking a job thatâs âless thanâ what youâre capable of? Will you be bored? Will you fit in? Are you only marking time until retirement? Help them see that youâre a good fit with an answer that addresses those underlying concerns: âI may be overqualified, but I see that as a bonus for you. I am more than ready to do this job, and I understand what it takes to be successful in it. Aside from learning the specific way you do things at this organization, my actual task learning curve would be flat and I could produce results almost immediately.â Pointing out what they stand to gain from this deal is always a good idea. âI may be overqualified, but this particular position looks great to be because of X.â X may be any number of reasons: you really like their product /service, you are excited about the work theyâre doing, or even a more personal reason. One gentleman I know told his interviewer, âMy current job is over an hour away and I donât want to move because I like where I live. The quality of life Iâd get from eliminating that long commute would mean a lot to me.â It was a real reason and calmed their fears about hiring him. 2. How do I know youâll be really motivated to do this job? This is not just a question of motivation, but also one about your energy and enthusiasm. You have several good options for answering it: Offer your references to speak for you and your work ethic. References are powerful. Point out a recent big accomplishment. If itâs only been a few months since you won an award or conquered a major challenge, the motivation question should be answered. Bring a 30-60-90-Day Plan to your interview. Thereâs nothing like putting together a plan for success on the job before you get it. Itâs a powerful demonstration of your work ethic, your knowledge, and your critical thinking skills. 3. How would you feel if you worked for someone who knows less than you? Working for someone who knows less than you do is not greatâ"and if you truly are someone whoâs been around the block, youâve probably gained a lot of wisdom and judgment that a younger person just canât have. However, to answer this question, the only really good answer sounds something like this: âI have found that even if someone knows less than me in one area, they know more than me in another. I usually find that I can learn something useful from everyone, and I think itâs exciting to work with a wide range of people because of that.â Keep all your answers focused on the positive, and they will go a long way toward supporting your candidacy. What Current Fashion Trend Makes You Cringe - Fairygodboss Your wardrobe says a lot about you. Your clothes can reflect your personal style and your professionalism, especially when it comes to workplace attire.Different offices have different dress codes (or lack thereof), and different employees have different tastes in work clothing. One FGBer took to our Community to ask others about their least favorite fashion trends of the moment, and whether they are workplace-appropriate.What current female fashion trend makes you cringe? she asked. I cant handle the balloon sleeves people are wearing nowadays. There is just too much going on. Also, the attempt to wear a sweater when youre cold with ginormous sleeves is just a fail.
